The NSW Government’s Far West Active Fest kicks off this week, offering a variety of free activities including a colour run, mini-triathlon, mini obstacle course and athletics events for children and adults living in communities across regional NSW.

The NSW Government has partnered with Creative Community Concepts, Kit Bag for Kids, MALO Republic and Black Dog Institute to deliver the free events, with all kids to receive free training gear and the chance to win giveaways throughout the day. The Black Dog Institute will also be on hand delivering mental health and wellbeing workshops for adults and children.

Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said it’s exciting to see the number of locations grow following the success of last year’s events.

“Last year we held eight Far West Active Fest events across the region, with almost 1000 locals joining in on the fun,” Mr Ayres said.

“I’m thrilled we will be including an additional three locations this year, providing the opportunity for even more people in the Far West to take part, get active and have fun.”

Minister for Western New South Wales and Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said Far West Active Fest provides a unique experience for communities in rural and remote locations.

“It’s not very often we see events like this in the Far West region,” Mr Saunders said.

“For many kids, last year was the first time they have ever had the opportunity to participate in a colour run.

“It was incredibly rewarding to deliver this event to communities in rural and remote locations, and I’m looking forward to an even bigger year this year.”

The aim of the Far West Active Fest program is to increase regular and on-going participation in sport, in particular for population groups under-represented such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Far West Active Fest will be held at 11 locations throughout February and March with events at Goodooga (28 February), Collarenebri (1 March), Lightning Ridge (2 March), Walgett (3 March), Wilcannia (7 March), Broken Hill (8 March), Menindee (9 March), Brewarrina (14 March), Bourke (15 March) and Ivanhoe (week commencing 12 April TBC).

Activities start at 4pm with the Act, Belong, Commit Program running from 6-7:30pm. For further information, including venue details, visit: www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activefest
