Go Wild

Go Wild
Add value to your next school camp with Go Wild. Offered by Lake Burrendong Sport and Recreation Centre in association with Taronga Western Plains Zoo, this overnight program lets schools get up close and personal with the animals while immersing themselves in the natural spaces of the zoo grounds. It’s a great way to kick-start or end a ROAR (Relationships, Outdoor, Action, Resilience) program.

Incorporated into any curriculum excursion, Go Wild is a fun and engaging way for students to learn about animals and their environment. It also offers cross-curricular opportunities in Sustainability, Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.

Who should attend?

This program can be completed by students at any primary or secondary year level.
At least one teacher per school group is required to attend (more may be required for larger groups). Teachers attend the program free-of-charge.

Program content

Go Wild is a great add-on to our signature ROAR (Relationships, Outdoors, Action, Resilience) program and works towards HSIE (Human Society and Its Environment) and PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education) outcomes.

An up close and personal experience at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, students will:
  • Learn about animals in a fun and engaging way
  • Meet the animals and see them in a different light during an immersive night walk
  • Camp overnight in tents at the Billabong Camp
  • Gaze at the night sky while enjoying a BBQ dinner
  • Toast marshmallows over an open campfire
  • Take a behind the scenes tour of the zoo with a chance to feed the animals and have a hands-on reptile encounter.

In addition to the zoo experience, students may participate in the following activities back at Lake Burrendong Sport and Recreation Centre:
  • Canoeing
  • Mountain biking
  • Obstacle challenge course
  • Team based and problem solving challenges
  • Giant slip ’n slide
  • Rock climbing and other at-height challenges.

Program duration

Go Wild is a one-day overnight program to be added-on to another outdoor education program at Lake Burrendong. We recommend adding Go Wild to our ROAR (Relationships, Outdoors, Action, Resilience) program – our signature school camp that stimulates and motivates students while complementing the curriculum.
