Primary Future Leaders Program Overview

Approach

Our approach to student leadership development is built on the following assumptions:

  • Leadership is collaborative
  • Leadership is a process, rather than a position
  • All students are potential leaders – not only those who hold formal leadership positions such as SRC members or prefects
  • Service and social action are powerful vehicles for developing students’ leadership skills.

​Objectives

The Future Leaders Program has 2 primary objectives:

  1. To develop students’ self-awareness and leadership capacity, which includes:
  • developing each student’s understanding of their own talents, skills, strengths and interests, especially as they relate to their capacity to lead
  • developing each student’s capacity to work collaboratively on bringing about social change in their school or community.
  1. To facilitate positive social change at each student’s school or in their community, through implementing actions that will help their school or community to function more effectively and fairly.

​Workshops

The program will achieve these 2 objectives through a series of 5 hands-on workshops that will require students to explore in-depth, the following key leadership capabilities:

Introduction to leadership

At the end of this session students should be able to:

  • Identify characteristics that make a good leader
  • Recognise their own strengths, talents, skills and interests and those of their team members
  • Apply their strengths and skills in practical activities
  • Reflect on how their strengths, talents, skills and interests can be used effectively by the team in completing their action project.

Communication and listening skills

At the end of this session students should be able to:

  • Identify the key points to being a good communicator and active listener
  • Apply effective listening and communication skills in practical activities
  • Identify barriers to good communication and listening
  • Identify key elements of their School Action Plan (SAP) that will require effective communication and listening skills
  • Reflect on their own listening and communication skills and identify what specific skills they would like to work on.

Critical and creative thinking

At the end of this session students should be able to:

  • Understand the benefits of collaborative thinking when developing innovative solutions
  • Practise strategies to collaborate effectively when critically and creatively engaging with a problem
  • Apply thinking strategies in order to collaboratively create innovative solutions to problems and/or situations
  • Reflect on strategies that will support their team to create innovative solutions to bring about their identified change.

Goal setting and action planning

At the end of this session students should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of planning and goal setting for successful project outcomes
  • Articulate their project goal and the tasks that need to be completed in order for their project to be successful
  • Identify the resources required to complete each task, who is responsible, and timelines for completion.

Problem solving and decision making

At the end of this session students should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of having agreed processes for decision making and problem solving within their team
  • Apply different approaches to decision making and problem solving that encourage openness to others’ ideas and building on possible solutions to get the best outcome
  • Reflect on the value of exploring different perspectives and solutions to a problem or decision
  • Develop shared processes for decision making and problem solving for their SAP project team.

School Action Plan

Participating students will design a School Action Plan (SAP) that addresses a key school or community issue that is identified by the students prior to arrival at camp. During their program, students will reflect on their learning and apply this knowledge in order to develop their action plan with the support of their accompanying teacher.

The SAP will encourage students to pursue an issue that is relevant to their school or community’s needs and they will be playing a valuable role in the school decision making process. Where students require guidance, principals may be able to present to students some of the key issues from their school plans so that a collaborative approach can be adopted in meeting their identified goals for the school.
